I went and competed in the North Island and National Compak Sporting Clays Championship 2018 held at the Wanganui/Rangitikei Clay Target Club. The North Island Championship was on the 26th of October. The National Championship followed on the 27th and the 28th.
My hopes for this event did not happen, with me shooting the worst I ever have at Compak. The last time I shot a National event in 2016 I ended up with a Silver B Grade. I was not able to win a medal this year, I had a terrible week leading into this shoot. We are painting our house and the repairs were taking longer than expected. I worried we weren’t going to get them done in time, also ended up with my right hand getting bit by a dog.
It was a great shoot with challenging targets but I couldn’t get my head in the game. On a stand more than once I would shot 2 of the first 10 and then shoot 12 out of the remaining 15. You know something is not right when that happens. I ended up turning the shoot into a training session. Which was good as there were a lot of targets below your feet, I haven’t shot many like that. Overall the shoot ran really well, every day we finished shooting just after lunch.
It wasn’t a waste of a trip as Best Man Cam ended 1st C Grade for both the North Island and National Championship. He shot 80/100 for the North Island and 141 for the Nationals. I caught up with a few of the Aussies that came over for the 2016 shoot and some of Dads old mates. It was great to see them again. Might arrange a trip over there to shoot some clays with them.
Congratulations to Johnny Younger for HOA (High Overall) in the North Island Champs and to Mark Vessey for HOA at the NZ Champs.
